Committed to improving the environmental performance of businesses, especially within the construction sector, Ian set up Responsible Solutions Ltd to work with businesses that want to make a real difference both to their own business efficiency and in terms of their real environmental and social impact.
After training initially as a civil engineer Ian’s work has, for the last 20 years, focused on business improvement activities, initially with responsibilities for quality assurance but increasingly from the late 1990’s looking at environmental management and sustainable development within the construction industry. In addition to developing and successfully implementing a quality system to the ISO9001 standard within a 550-employee design consultancy, Ian has run numerous business improvement and change projects during this time and so in addition is an experienced project manager. He is a Chartered Quality Practitioner and Member of the Chartered Quality Institute (MCQI), Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers (FICE) and a Practioner Member of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (PIEMA). He has a BSc (Hons) in Water and Environmental Management and an MSc in Responsibility and Business Practice.
Over recent years Ian has assisted a range of organisations with the development of environmental management systems for companies ranging from small (circa £5m) civil engineering contractors to larger manufacturing companies. He also has experience of life cycle analysis techniques such as Ecological Footprinting, and their utilisation as corporate measurement and performance reporting tools. He has built wide experience of responsible sourcing over the last 5 years, during which time he has advised a wide range of manufacturers on their certification to the BES6001 Responsible Sourcing Standard.
Ian is also a very experienced trainer and has delivered environmental training to a wide range of different companies and audiences, ranging from construction operatives, supervisors, and senior management teams, even the Royal Engineers. He currently delivers many of the workshops for the Supply Chain Sustainability School IAn is also Technical Director for CEEQUAL
